This wiki will be updated this summer with additional information for 2018-2019 candidates.

North Carolina provides three substitute days for state-funded candidates seeking initial National Board Certification. These days are only available for initial candidates. They are not available for retake or renewal candidates. There are a total of three days provided by the state over the initial certification period. There are not three days provided each year. In order to qualify for these substitute days, the candidate must meet the qualifications for the state loan, whether or not the candidate applied for the loan. Visit the DPI National Board Certification Page for more information about qualification requirements for loan funding and/or substitute days.

If you qualify for the state-funded substitute days, you must obtain your substitute and your principal's permission for your absence. Then fax your signed Request for Absence form to Lynda Bakeman at 980-343-5408. Your principal's signature must be on the faxed Request for Absence (RfA) form. If you have not already completed a CMS Candidate Information Form for the current school year, you will also need to fax to Lynda the CMS Candidate Information Form. Lynda will apply the budget code and return the RfA form to your school via scanned email attachment. Be sure to include your email address in the upper right corner of the form. Request for Absence forms must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the planned absence to allow time for processing.

If you have questions about substitute funding, contact Linda Yarbrough at linda.yarbrough@cms.k12.nc.us.
