Lateral entry teachers hired by CMS must attend the state-required 10-day lateral entry training before beginning to teach. The Lateral Entry Advancement Program (LEAP) is held at the Spaugh Professional Development Center, 1901 Herbert Spaugh Lane, Charlotte, NC, 28208. New lateral entry teachers will receive information about their reporting date for LEAP when they are hired by CMS.

The 10-day program consists of several modules, as outlined below.

NC Teaching Standards & Evaluation Instrument: The learner will become familiar with the NC Teaching Standards and the NC Teacher Evaluation Process (NCTEP).

Planning and Assessment: The learner will be introduced to the CMS Instructional Planning Approach (IPA) and explore how to incorporate the cycle of assessment, analysis, and action when planning instruction.

The learner will also examine characteristics of good teaching and will explore teaching strategies appropriate to their teaching assignment.

Classroom Management: The learner will learn various classroom management ideas/theories and will develop a classroom management plan including rules, procedures, consequences, and interventions to prevent and address problem behaviors. The learner will also explore ethical issues and the topic of diversity in our schools.

Technology and Professionalism: The learner will brainstorm appropriate standards for professionalism, learn strategies for effective parent communication, and become familiar with CMS policies and expectations. The learner will be introduced to key CMS technology topics including curriculum resource sites and Interactive White Board overviews.

School Visits: There will be two days designated as school visit days where the learner will visit his or her assigned school site.
